Advanced and Enriched Course Opportunities

Pearl R. Miller Middle School offers enriched and advanced courses designed to provide increased depth, breadth, and pace of instruction for students who demonstrate strong academic readiness and advanced learning needs. These courses emphasize higher-level thinking and are intended to challenge students through rigorous academic experiences.

The program is needs-based and intended for students who demonstrate exceptionally strong ability or performance compared to their chronological peers in specific academic areas. Instruction in these courses is adapted to ensure an appropriate level of challenge and focuses on developing critical thinking, creative problem-solving, analytical reasoning, and decision-making skills.

For the 2026–2027 school year, enriched or advanced coursework is available in Grades 6–8 for mathematics and in Grade 8 for English Language Arts.

Pearl R. Miller Middle School recognizes that students develop academically at different rates and may become ready for advanced coursework at different points during middle school. For this reason, multiple entry points into enriched and advanced pathways have been established, allowing students opportunities throughout Grades 6–8 to be recommended for these courses. Mathematics pathways, however, are structured sequentially, meaning prerequisite courses cannot be skipped; however, summer advancement opportunities may allow students to enter a different pathway. The pathway charts illustrate how middle school course sequences connect to Grade 9 courses at Kinnelon High School.

Student performance and academic indicators are reviewed annually to determine course placement for the following school year. Students who are not recommended for an advanced course in a given year may still qualify in a future year if they meet the established placement criteria.

The Course Pathways charts illustrate possible progression routes across the middle school years. Arrows in the charts indicate the potential movement between courses.  Additional information regarding screening, reconsideration, and exiting an advanced course can be found below the Course Pathways section.

JumpStart Math Pathway Assessment Process (Rising Grade 6)

Students placed into Math 6 Enriched may elect to participate in the JumpStart Math Pathway assessment process for possible placement into an accelerated middle school mathematics sequence.

The JumpStart pathway is designed for students demonstrating exceptional readiness in mathematics and allows students to progress through advanced coursework at an accelerated pace. Students who qualify have the opportunity to complete both Algebra I and Geometry during middle school, placing them in a position to take advanced high school mathematics courses such as AP Calculus BC as a junior and Multivariable Calculus as a senior.

Participation in the assessment is optional and available only to students placed into Math 6 Enriched. Placement decisions for the JumpStart pathway are based solely on student performance on the assessment. Students must meet the established benchmark score in order to qualify for placement into the accelerated course.

Students who do not qualify will remain in Math 6 Enriched, which is already an advanced and rigorous mathematics pathway that prepares students for future acceleration opportunities. There is no waiver or reconsideration process associated with JumpStart placement decisions.

Families of students placed into Math 6 Enriched will receive the assessment registration information via email during the month of May.

Math Acceleration for Current 7th-Grade Students in Math 7

7th-grade students who were not in the accelerated math pathway (took Math 7) and are interested in pursuing Algebra 1 in 8th grade may be eligible to enroll in the Kinnelon Public Schools Summer Mathematics Academy Course: Introduction to Algebra. This three-week summer program is designed to provide students with the foundational algebra skills and mathematical readiness needed for success in Algebra I. Eligible students must complete the course requirements, including the final assessment and attendance expectations, to advance in the fall.

This course is also an excellent refresher opportunity for students who have already completed Pre-Algebra 7A and will be entering Algebra I in the fall. The program reinforces key algebraic concepts, strengthens problem-solving skills, and helps students build confidence before beginning high school-level mathematics coursework.
